Aside from running www.straightedgelifestyle.com i also do a small hardcore label Go-Team Records (www.go-teamrecords.com) I signed Something Inside a straight edge youth crew band from Germany after grabing a copy of there awesome demo from Terror who had them on there merch desk. I am shortly to release the band's debut 11 track album entitled "New Steps & New Days" check it out and check out Go-Team...rock on ...Phil Edge Lifestyle xXx
How did the band start up? and what is the local music scene like in Germany?
Dude, it all started really simply actually. Mike and I had both been in a band with each other so we both felt very much the same about doing a band and as I came up with the idea to do a straight up hardcore band I knew I wanted Toni on drums and robin on guitar if I did a new band, so I asked them and it all worked out.
Our local hardcore scene is really mixed up we got Built On Trust, The Truth, Tomorrow To Ashes, The Backseat Story, Nothing Ever dies, all sorts of hardcore but we dont have many venues but we manage to keep it alive by driving a little bit more
How long have you known the guys in the band and how did you all meet?
Well, we all got into hardcore at different times, Mike for example has been involved in the senftenberg hardcore scene since 92, he was best friends with the guys in human behaviour the first straight edge band in East Germany. Toni and Robin were always good friends and got into hardcore through the time we used to skate a lot and I got involved in the punk scene when I got my first tape from an old punk. It was minor threat so I got slowly involved that was around 95/96
What was growing up in Germany like? You must have some fond memories? (Germanys a great place to visit stayed there for two weeks when I was like 8-very clean)
I dont know! I guess it wouldnt be a big difference to grow up somewhere else as a kid you dont give a fuck about how big your playground is or whatever lifes just easier! The only thing that sticks out of my mind is when east and west Germany became one I was around ten years old and everything was just so strange...I cant explain it but I know these changes are the biggest memories from that time and I wont miss a minute
In one of your new songs coming out on the album there is a reference to Nazism and following a dead fucking leader are there still people in Germany that hold those sorts of bigoted views? Theyre pretty lame.
Yeah we still have to deal with that shit its not that bad as it used to be but once in a while we have to fight back against the nazi scum I remember a vision show maybe 4 years ago there were about 30 naziskins outside knocking on the door every kid inside got ready to beat the shit out of these suckers even the vision guys were ready to kick somebodys ass we counted down...3,2,1 and ran outside it was a crazy fight but we made them bleed and it was the last time we heard about these assholes
Your lyrics are overtly straight edge orientated, when did you first hear about the edge and what is about being drug free that gives you strength inside?
Yo as I said before it was around 9596 when I found the edge and from then Ive been getting stronger every day I got something I believe in its so pure, so true, I put my heart in it and I know I wont get disappointed because I have my friends the music and the shows where I take my strength from
Would you say you are all positive people? What sort of message do you want kids to be left with after hearing your songs?
I think were just kids with normal problems we have to deal with good and bad moods and sometimes we get angry about peoples stupidity, self-righteous attitudes and ignorance or something like that but we always try to make the best of everything and so are our songs about daily life and the straight edge of course! and if we get some kids moshing and singing along Im sure we left a good message or at least a good set!
Are you excited about the album coming out at the end of September? How did you come to signing with Go-Team and? what is your relationship with the label like?
Man I cant tell you how excited we are about our upcoming CD on Go-Team Rec. weve never thought it would happen that fast we just recorded our demo and as Terror played in our area I gave Scott about ten demos he should give them to all the cool kids out there and after a few weeks I got an email...yo its phil from go-team rec. I got your demo from Scott...and here we are a few months later it has been great so far and I think our relationship just started
The album was recorded in two parts, was it not? Once in September 03 & in April 04 Its taken a while for the official release to come out, have you got many shows planned & any aspirations to tour through Europe & the UK?
Of course the main goal is to play as much shows as possible we want to play different citys and different countrys meet a lot of awesome kids and just have a good time and we thought about doing a European or UK tour winter 04-05 but Toni our drummer doesnt get time off because he has a serious job we probably have to fill in a friend who is hitting the drums on that tour!
If Go-Team organised a UK tour would you do it? & which UK bands would you be most interested in sharing a stage with? (I know youve just seen Justice (Dead & Gone) supporting Mental)
Yeah were always down to do a UK tour but as is said before its hard to get some time off...sharing the stage with? Well I cant or I wont say this band or that band because I think Ian is doing a great job with dead and gone rec. and I think it would be a great time and a great experience to share the stage with one of those bands it doesnt matter which band
I heard you got some sweet ass T-shirts made up? Man theyre legendary, where can I get one? Will Go-Team be allowed to make some up?
Our white shirts are sold out already and now were working on a new design for some black shirts and as soon as I get them I will hit you up and if go-team is interested in doing some shirts for us we couldnt be more down to that
Broccoli or cauliflower? (I had the question as ice cream or cookies but you guys are vegan / vegetarian rightthey probably make vegan ice cream thinking about it haha)
Yes we are...but I still would say tofutti-vegan ice cream nothing can beat that!
Whats your favourite vegetarian / vegan meal? How is it made? (Down to specific measurements, tablespoons and all that shit)
My favourite meal would be number 28 from our local Chinese restaurant its rice, vegetables and tofu all mixed up with an hot and spicy sauce, I love to eat in a restaurant because I dont have to cook, I dont have to clean up and all that shit just give me a spoon and nr.28 and Im happy with that!
What is the German translation for the phrase True till death? (I had penis envy down but figured it was silly however if you wanna give that translation a whirl too haha)
true till death = treu bis zum tod
How would you like the people to perceive the band & what if anything would you like to be remembered for?
They should perceive us as what we are 4 kids who are doing a straight edge band thats all nothing more & nothing less
All time favourite albums are?
Bold, youth of today, judge, floorpunch, killing time, straight ahead...just to name a few!
Best live band in the world is? (because?)
