In This For Fun

This band emails me on myspace called In This For Fun and the pic of the band with fruit x core scrawled across it excites me so I go check them out and oh my word what a gem, they may be young but with a few more shows they have a shite load of potential think well the wonder years and your pretty much there. I’m into all genres of music so pop-punk has its bonuses I’m not into focusing on one style of music when I like them all, open minds people that’s what this game’s all about!

Heya guys! Who are you all, where are you based and where did the name In This For Fun come from? Or it is more of a description of why you’re doing the band in the first place?

Hi

I’m Alex, I play bass.

I’m Fisher, I sing.

I’m James, I play drums.

I’m Thom, I play guitar.

I’m Ronan and I play guitar as well.

We all come from in or near Ipswich and our name comes from a ‘Set it Straight’ lyric. I (Fisher) was on the bus to work one day, trying to come up with a name and then I hear ‘I thought we were all in this for fun?” coming from my minidisc player, and it felt perfect. But yeah, it’s also a description – that’s mainly what we’re about; jokes. haha.

Are you having fun yet?

We’re ALWAYS having fun. J

The songs are freaking sweet super posi and upbeat…what bands where you influenced by, what are your ambitions with the band and what do you want to get out of doing it?

Thanks man!

We all listen to loads of stuff within the hardcore/pop-punk crossover, but the main stuff to influence us would be newer stuff like Bangarang! or Daggermouth. We’re not doing anything new or different, so I got no problems being influenced by new bands, haha.

All we wanna do with band is have fun; get out there, play shows, meet people and just have a laugh.

What is fruit X core? Is this a new movement? Can I join? I’m always carrying fruit on me…we could mark out hands with fruit or some shit like that and pelt people with fruit who don’t like us!

Haha, oh dear. This came with a momentary stroke of genius while pratting about in the garden. We were going out to take some photos, so someone thought it’d be jokes to pick up some fruit. Then I guess we thought we’d poke fun and the ever increasing number of ‘cores’ that have surfaced within the last few years.

But on a more serious note, yes it’s a movement, yes we’re militant and yes you can join, but the initiation involves beating up a burger. MORE FRUIT PLEASE.

Be honest, you’re in it for the ladies right? No one starts a pop punk band unless they’re in it for the ladies haha

Well, we got a picture comment from a 15 year old girl saying ‘you guys are babes’,

So what do YOU think?

What’s your fanbase like? Have you played many shows? You’ve only just started up so are you finding it quite difficult to establish yourselves?

Fanbase, haha... what’s that?

We got some pretty enthusiastic people on the old Myspace, but that’s it.

We still haven’t played, so we’ll have to wait and see what people make of us after that.

To be honest, the level of enthusiasm we’ve received over the last couple of months has been amazing, especially since we’ve only been together since February/March time. So thanks for that.

What bands get you excited these days? Who are you influenced by and who would you love to tour with?

As far as getting excited, it’s anything we can get pumped to. Haha

Stuff like Have Heart, Bane, Shook Ones, Agent, Bangarang!, Wonder Years, Set your Goals, Daggermouth, New Found Glory, Crime in Stereo, Fireworks.

We all went to see Down to Nothing the other week and that was TOO sick.

There are some seriously good bands around these days. Bands like Save Your Breath from Newport or All or Nothing from Birmingham. We’re playing gigs with both of them in the summer and we can’t wait. Another great band is Maycomb from Wolverhamton. With the way things are looking for shows over the summer, we can’t really ask for anymore. Just to be able to get out there with these rad bands will be enough.

How is Ipswich these days? What’s your local scene like and do you have many shows there?

Ipswich is great for skating and parties, but the music scene is dead. There’s loads of bands, but none of them are really any good – but there are some kids that are trying to bring better bands to the area, so hopefully things will get better. The lack of decent venues is a big problem though.

When did you record the demo? How do you go about advertising it? Selling them? Myspace? I think loads of kids would be into your music so blitz the old myspace, send people messages just go on to the new found glory or yellowcard pages and steal all there fans! Go for it!

We did it and some guy’s house in April after about 3 practices, haha. We’re not gonna sell them, we’ll probably rip a few to hand out at shows. I think we’re recording again soon, so hopefully that’ll work out good.

A lot of problems with UK bands is that they start up make a few good songs and then disband, hope you have plans to stick around a bit longer and maybe craft a name for yourselves because there are plenty of opportunities out there!

We plan to stick around as long as we can, the main problem being education – we’re all at Uni or college, so that gets in the way a lot, but as we’re friends I imagine it’ll be easier to stick together.

Talking about opportunities, we might be going to France in September to play with this awesome band ‘Chunk, NO! Captain Chunk!’, so if that pans out it’ll be insane!

Thanks for the interview anyone reading this go check out the myspace page and any promoters contact them for a show! Any last words?

Thanks for checking us out and all the kind words.

Good luck with the site and everything in the future.

If anyone’s around during our dates this summer, come and check us out.

Have fun.

In This For Fun x

Thanks

Philxxx
